ReCERTification

It is common for real life priorities to sometimes pull us away from volunteering opportunities, and in CERT we’ve always been about taking care of yourself and your family first. But we want to make it as easy as possible for our CERT alumni to get back into the swing of things. If you were previously a certified CERT member but have been inactive, you can renew your active status without the need of retaking the entire multi-week course.

The Recertification Process

To return to active status, we ask that you first refresh your knowledge by downloading the current CERT Participant Manuals from our resources page linked here. Please take the time to read the manual in its entirety to ensure you are up to date with the latest FEMA standards. Once you have finished your review, complete the final test located at the back of the manual and submit your answers to the team leadership for verification.

The final step is to demonstrate your hands-on skills by participating in a Deployment Exercise. You have two options to fulfill this requirement:

  • Class Finals: Join the mock disaster drill held at the end of our biannual CERT basic classes (typically held in the Spring and Fall).
  • The Regional CDE: Participate in the larger CERT Deployment Exercise (CDE) held in West Salem, which brings together teams from around Oregon including Portland NET and other CERT teams.

Once your test is verified and your participation in an exercise is recorded, you will be officially moved back to our active roster. We look forward to having you back on the team.

TLDR – Re-Activate Your CERT Status

Ready to get back in the field? Follow these four steps to return to active status:

  1. Download the Manual: Access the current FEMA CERT Participant Manual from our Resources Page.
  2. Refresh Your Knowledge: Read the manual thoroughly to catch up on the latest emergency protocols.
  3. Complete the Test: Finish the exam at the back of the manual for verification.
  4. Join an Exercise: Participate in a hands-on drill. You can join a local Class Final (held twice yearly) or the Regional CDE in West Salem (also held twice yearly).

Back on the Roster: Once your test and exercise participation are confirmed, you are officially active.
