While our hands-on training and exercises provide the physical skills needed for disaster response, Salem CERT members are strongly encouraged to complete several online “Independent Study” courses offered by FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute. These free, self-paced classes provide a deeper understanding of the Incident Command System (ICS) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS), the standardized frameworks used by professional first responders across the country.
Completing these courses not only enhances your knowledge but also ensures that our neighborhood teams can integrate seamlessly with the Salem Fire Department and other professional agencies during a large-scale event.

These four classes provide the essential foundation for any disaster volunteer.
- IS-100.C: Introduction to the Incident Command System – Introduces the basic structure and terminology used to manage emergencies of all sizes.
